The centre of the tooth contains a sensitive tissue called ‘pulp’ which sits in the centre of the tooth called the root canal. The pulp is made of nerves and blood vessels and provides nutrients and feeling to the tooth. Sometimes the pulp may get infected or damaged beyond repair due to trauma, tooth decay, chip, crack or deep fillings. The tooth then requires a root canal treatment which involves removing damaged or infected pulp, thoroughly cleaning the canals and filling it.
Root canal treatment is usually carried out in two or more visits. We will recommend a crown be fitted over the tooth if there is significant loss of tooth structure.
